Build the day around these windows

Ranges are wide on purpose: babies of the same age differ by an hour or more, and a baby at the short end of the range is not behind. Under about six months of corrected age, sleepy cues are a better guide than any chart on this page.

Where these numbers come from

Tier 1 — evidence-based The ranges on this page are the consensus sleep totals and nap counts below. The phrase "wake window" itself is a Tier 2 practice-based heuristic: it does not appear in the pediatric sleep-medicine literature, so treat the window lengths as a starting estimate and let your baby's sleepy cues override them.
